Rocky Mountain Ruby 2011
The following are ideas, books, projects, etc. from conversations with some folks at Rocky Mountain Ruby.
A Book on Drawing
Jim Weirich mentioned the book entitled “New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. He also performed a wonderful rendition of John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High”.
The book includes:
- the latest developments in brain research;
- material on using drawing techniques in the corporate world and in education;
- instruction on self-expression through drawing;
- an updated section on using color; and
- detailed information on using the five basic skills of drawing for problem solving.
This is one that I am going to add to my reading list for sure! There are plenty of reviews on the book that are interesting to read. Go and whet your appetite for more).
API Design
"If you are a software developer, then you are an API designer. Design with purpose and intent."
Anthony Eden graced us with his presence and gave an inspiring talk on api design. He taught us how to make our apis consistent, clear, convenient, concise, and complete. He also talked plenty of smack about Net::HTTP. Anthony made clear points about its lack of a good API. He also showed off various examples of great APIs. Remember, the best API is no API.

Nick Knows the REST
Nick “The German” Sutterer gave a talk on REST.
I expected Nick to be stuttering when he began his talk. To my delight, I had misread his last name.
His talk was about components of RESTful architecture, namely hypermedia. And his delivery was just spot on. He showed off his own resource oriented framework, roar. An impressive resource-oriented framework and a comprehensive readme.
The Non Designers Design Book
I believe it was Grant Blakeman who mentioned the book entitled “The Non-Designer’s Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice” was mentioned. Though I have not read it yet, I have added it to my reading list.
The truth is…
The conference was awesome; each presenter was awesome! There are many speakers to mention and I doubt I will try to mention them all. I may periodically update this page.
